When Alexandra Primary School in Hounslow first introduced Writer's Toolbox, Headteacher John Norton admits he had reservations. With 35 years in education, he'd seen plenty of programs come and go. But it didn't take long for his thinking to shift.
"When I first saw it, I was very skeptical to start with, but it didn't take me long to understand that it's a really good tool for the children to use in class and at home."
For Year 4 teacher Miss Padda, the initial hesitation was practical. As a school following the UK national curriculum, she wasn't sure a programme with international roots would translate locally. What she found was something that not only aligned with what she was already teaching, but extended on it.
"It's almost like Writer's Toolbox is becoming a bit of an additional adult within the classroom when needed."
Seeing the pupils change their relationship with writing is one of the most significant shifts at Alexandra Primary.
