    Toolbox in Action: Real-World Insights From the Classroom Floor

    New Heights for Year 9 NAPLAN Scores

    St Columban’s College, a Catholic secondary college in Caboolture with nearly 1,200 students and over 90 teaching staff, is part of Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) and the Edmund Rice schools network.  The school adopted Writer’s Toolbox to reverse a persistent decline in NAPLAN writing scores.  As a result, St Columban's recorded the best Year 9 NAPLAN writing scores in the school’s history in 2024, and was one of eight BCE schools that collectively outperformed the state average NAPLAN growth by 8x, just 12 months after adopting the programme.  Led by a leadership team, including WRITE! 26 workshop presenters, Deputy Principal Kate Ruddy and Assistant Principal Amanda Schimke, St Columban's has more than lived up to its standards of excellence and is a thriving hotspot of Toolbox integration and engagement.

    Inspiring Boys to Writing Excellence

    Established in 1891, St Joseph's Nudgee College Junior School is an all-boys Catholic school located in Brisbane's northern suburbs, serving over 1,680 students across Years 5–12. The school adopted Writer’s Toolbox in 2019 and has since seen writing outcomes soar, demonstrating a successful approach to inspiring student engagement.

     

    Former Principal Peter Fullagar noted that Toolbox provided the tools and incentive to activate boys’ love of writing. “As a general rule,” he said, “boys don’t tend to write as naturally as we would like. In using the framework, they have greater confidence in their capacity to write.” The college's success provides a powerful model for schools to transform their writing culture.

    Aviation State High School

    Raising the Writing Bar Across All Subjects

    Just off the banks of Kedron Brook, Aviation State High School in Brisbane offers Years 7–12 students a pathway into aerospace, data analytics, and STEM fields. Now, Aviation proudly hangs its hat on its writing outcomes as well. The school has used Toolbox from the outset—one of the first Australian schools to adopt the tool.
    Having successfully integrated Writer's Toolbox across all subjects, Aviation has seen Toolbox drive a noticeable lift in writing quality throughout its roll of over 600. Principal David Munn highlights that test results don’t tell the whole story. “It’s the quality of writing that students are producing. The data around the strength and precision of our writing is evident. The feedback to the students is instant... It has been a godsend.”
