Sentences

Writer’s Toolbox is based on the fundamental premise that the sentence is the means of communication; as a result, sentence fluency is the core of writing and thinking development.  The Writer’s Toolbox system was built on proven research into writing improvement—what worked in schools and education systems over the past 150 years.  Anchored into Writer’s Toolbox are the rules of composition and explicit teaching of writing skills from the late 19th century, along with the work of Lev Vygotsky, the Socratic method, Discovery Learning, and advances in neuroscience.  The result is an educational writing programme based on sound practice and evidence.  

Subject and Verb

Based on research into sentence chunking and sentence combining methodologies, the Sentence Train™ is used physically in classrooms and digitally in sentence module activities to advance a pupil’s syntactic maturity.  The subject, for example, is always represented by the locomotive.  Verb phrases can be contained in a carriage, with predicates chunked across several.  Pupils also learn multiple ways to cast a sentence.  Fronted adverbials, compound and complex sentence forms, relative clauses—and their associated commas rules—are easily learned.  Ultimately, by arranging train pieces and punctuation into the correct order, sentence structure and punctuation rules are taught in a fun, simple, and memorable way. 

Practice

Writer’s Toolbox believes in the power of practice. Every day of the school year, Toolbox releases two new, short on-demand writing activities.  One for high school; one for primary school.  Every daily writing challenge has an image and a writing prompt: a low-stakes environment to practise and refine sentencing skills as well as expand creativity and adaptive thinking skills.  Additionally, Toolbox educators built hundreds of bespoke writing activities to expand pupils’ cognitive capacity in areas like sequencing, synthesis, judgement, evaluation, and inference.
