    Sentence Snap

    $55.00

    (excl. )

These A6 playing cards help students learn the Writer’s Toolbox 12 Sentence Styles and put them into practice.  Whether it’s Sentence Snap™ or any of your favourite card games, improve sentence-writing skills as you play.

The pack includes 52 playing cards with each of the 12 Ways to Write a Sentence represented (e.g. the Ace cards represent the Simple Sentence), 2 Jokers, and instructions for an assortment of classroom games.

Example Game Instruction: The Shortest Story

Let’s have some fun in the classroom with The Shortest Story challenge. Use this game as a warm up/ cool down to pull out when your students need some waking up and to stretch those cognitive muscles.

Your goal, if you choose to compete, is to create a story in the shortest number of sentences.

    • Jack, Queen, and King have a value of 10
    • Ace has a value of 1. No jokers needed.

    To Play:

Shuffle the pack and deal 2 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in a central pile. Take turns to Power Up, picking up a new card each time and adding up your total hand value each turn (e.g. if you have an Ace and a 9 of Hearts, you have 10 points in your hand). You cannot discard a card, only pick-up on your turn. If you hit 21 points, you’re done and can get writing. Watch out though.  If you go over 21, you're in Blackout. This means you have to write your story, using all the sentence styles on your cards; and one sentence must be exactly 21 words. Share your stories.

    Shortest story—correctly crafted—wins.

    Suitable 2+ players.

"We might have a lesson that focuses around sentence types because we really want to get that stretch in their writing in terms of style. For me, knowing that the language that I’m now using to do that is the same language another teacher in the school would use is reassuring. And, I can play off that a bit and draw parallels between writing for different subjects."
